What is My Senior Project?
Visitor Pamphlet Initiative
My project is centered around a pamphlet that educates people who are visiting Hawaii. Specifically, it shows them different ways that they can help our local sustainability initiatives through buying from local small businesses, not using plastic bottles/single use plastics, and or renting beach activity gear instead of buying it. These are just some of the different topics used in the pamphlet, but aside from the main point focusing on those initiatives, another goal of mine was to include the community in the creation of this project.
The first step to this project was going to be talking to local sustainability experts on what tourists need to know. In total I interviewed 7 different local non-profits on what they believe are the top 5 different ways that tourists could lessen their negative impact on Hawaii's ecosystem. I complied notes, and from that I have been able to build up what are the main concerns of the local sustainability community and prioritize them in my pamphlet. Last but not least, aside from my information I also wanted my graphics in the pamphlet to be sourced from the community too, so I held a small art competition with elementary and middle school students. In the end, My project has been created from both myself and the community, which has been the most direct goal I've been able to accomplish.

21st Century Skills -
My communication and interpersonal skills were immensely expanded on. During this project I interviewed 7 different local non-profits, and I remember the butterflies I had when I was getting ready to call the first non-profit interview I had scheduled over the phone. It went really well with a few slips of the tounge at the beginning, but after a couple minutes I was able to really get into my own stride. By my last interview, any anxiety I had around business phone calls or zoom meeting were far off in the distance. I'm really proud with what skills I've gained throughout this process, and know that as a host at a restaurant, I can confidently use them while in the work place.
